Did you know I’m bisexual? 🌈 Today is Bi Visibility Day. When I was 26-years-old I came out as bisexual and have been living as an out, open bisexual man ever since.

Identifying as bisexual is often met with resistance and judgement. The most common misconception is, “you’re gay and you don’t want to admit it.” Over the past 14 years I’ve often found myself having to defend that bisexuality exists, because it does. The truth is sexuality is fluid and studies have even shown a larger portion of the population is actually bisexual, but doesn’t identify as it. These are just some of the stigmas that come with bisexuality making it often feel like an invisible part of the LGBTQ+ community.

A definition I’ve read on bisexuality from the book “Getting Bi” that resonates deeply is - “I call myself bisexual because I acknowledge in myself the potential to be attracted, romantically and/or sexually, to people of more than one sex, not necessarily at the same time, not necessarily in the same way, and not necessarily to the same degree.”

As someone who has dated both men and women, I’ve experienced love based on human connection vs being defined to a black and white box placed on me by societal constraints or judgement. Being free to love who I am attracted to, male or female, has been a gift. It has allowed me to experience greater depths of connection in this human experience. And although I am in a loving relationship with a beautiful soul who identifies as a gay man, I still am and still will identify as bisexual. My partner doesn’t define or change my identity.

For anyone who has struggled with their sexuality not fitting into a gay or straight label, especially other bisexual men, you are not alone. It takes courage to live life as your authentic self no matter what anyone thinks, wants or expects of you. #bivisibilityday #bivisibility
